Poster Deconstruction - One Missed Call

Tagline: What Will It Sound Like When You Die?
This tagline instantly conveys to the audience this is a horror film because it is sinister to ask a question about death. As it is rhetorical, the audience is drawn in and left wondering, thus drawing attention to the film. The aim of a tagline is to sum up the movie, and can be used throughout the marketing process of the film, so it is vital that it can draw in the target audience.

Font
The font of the title One Missed Call is a simple white font that stands out against the dark background drawing the audience’s eye to it and making it simple and clear to read. At the bottom of the title however, the fonts appears to blur and fade which could represent the fading lives of the unfortunate victims. A key part of how font is used on this poster, is that the tagline is in red. This is the only real colour featured on the poster and although it highlights it as a sinister and eerie sentence, the text is small and the colour does not stand out as much as the white of the title and credits.

Colour Scheme
Black
and red are classic colours to use in the horror genre because of what the colours represent. The main colour is black which is used in horror because it symbolises death, mystery, fear and the unknown. Red is used for the title and release date because it stands out against the black background but also because of the meaning behind the colour red. Red represents blood, death, violence and danger. Using these colours on a poster instantly makes the audience relate the meanings of the colours and makes it clear that this is a horror film.

Main Image
The main image is a creepy looking face. This already makes the image scary and clear it’s a horror because you only get to see the protagonist on the poster. The way the edges have been edited to fade into the black background makes the figure look like it’s coming out of the shadows which is frightening because not all of the figure is shown, just the face and hand- it is the fear of the unknown. At first glance, the image just looks like a strange, slightly alien face, but when you look closer you can see that the eyes are actually a woman’s open mouths that look like they’re screaming. The screaming mouths show the fear of the victim in the film. Also the use of a woman’s mouth conveys the victim as being female which is a typical horror genre convention, because women are generally seen as the weaker more vulnerable gender. Overall the aesthetics of this poster are very minimal, featuring a plain background and one main picture. This also represents the un-know as the blackness hides the rest of the figure.
