Poster Deconstruction- Saw

Tagline
Every Puzzle has Its Pieces
The tagline, although quite simple, is cryptic in the way it makes the audience think after reading it. It is a literal sentence, but when paired with the poster image develops a new sinister meaning; a typical horror convention. It also infers that there will be many twists and turns like a game. 'Puzzle' suggests the movie will be challenging for the audience and 'Pieces' backs up the main image on this poster because they are pieces from a body.

Font:
This font has become the iconic font of the Saw franchise. Its unequal, messy and creates a feeling of unease. The rusty brown colour also backs up the title Saw.

Colour Scheme:
White is an uncommon colour to be used in horror films and posters, as it symbolises purity and innocence. This put together with the tagline word 'puzzle' also creates childish connotations; making the whole composition more scary. The use of white as the main colour may also be representing that the severed body parts are from innocent victims. The body pieces are also white but due to the loss of blood, the black on them adds to the view that they're mangled and have been through pain. The red blood is the only colour on the poster and comes across as strong and vivid; this could symbolise that this was murder and violent.

Main Image:
The main image is of a severed hand and foot which is shocking to see and instantly the horror genre is conveyed to the audience. The deathly dark colouring of the rotting flesh is disturbing, painful and vivid against the bright white background. The main image further represents the torture sub genre of horror; it shows the brutality and mutilation of the murders and that the film will have the classic horror conventions. The arm and the leg are also at such positions that they surely cannot be connected and so seem to be hacked off, they could be off different victims but the fact that you cant see any other body parts would suggest that it is only one person. The top border is a saw which supports the title of the film and further implies that horrific, brutal violence will occur in the film.
